Review: Going Home & Starting Over by Stacy Finz ~ Family Ties

Welcome to Stacy Finz's fictional small town of Nugget, California!

Come on in and grab a cup of tea! You're in for a treat!

[space size=15]

[space size=15]

Here we have a brother, Nate and a sister Maggie, who come to the small town of Nugget, California to help Maggie recover from a betrayal. In Starting over Noah has helped Maggie buy an abandoned mansion to spruce up and turn into a bed & breakfast. Maggie meets Rhys Shepard, the handsome Texas detective, home on leave to arrange care for his sick father. Rhys can't wait to hotfoot it back to Texas and get away from the small town he grew up in, although the town, Maggie and a couple surprises from his father have different plans for him.

The Romance

There was very little romance between Maggie and Rhys until the late second half of the book. There, of course, are reasons for this as [spoiler]Maggie is married to her cheating ex and doesn't send in the divorce papers til the second half. [/spoiler] It makes it hard to connect with them as a couple.

There are great things about this one and I wouldn't give up on Ms. Finz because as you know I found her in Finding Hope which was a great novel!

Then we come to Sam and Nate's story. Sam is a rich debutante who is rebelling and trying to find herself. She abandoned her society wedding and Wall Street fiance, while everyone was gathered in the church. I'm guessing she showed up in Nugget in her wedding dress maybe, I'm not sure as I've missed the third installment, Second Chance, and she shows up in that book. Anyways, she's been hired on as manager of the Lumber Baron while Maggie is [spoiler]on maternity leave. Yay!! Baby Alert![/spoiler].

Nate has major issues with Sam and I mean MAJOR. He's letting his past color his vision of her and that's really disappointing. One thing I can say about the Hero's in Ms. Finz novels, they AREN'T perfect!!

I admire Sam so much! That girl rocks in my book! She doesn't take too much of his gruff and when the sparks start to fly (the romantic ones) she doesn't let that distract her from how he treated her.

I really enjoyed the surprising twist at the end. You know, how they finally end up together. All I can say is sneaky, sneaky!

I've heard these stories compared to Jill Shalvis's Lucky Harbor series. I ADORE that series so it's rather hard for me to say that, but it comes close.

Spotlight & Excerpt - A Little Thing Called Love by Cathy Maxwell

[space size=10]

Most gently bred young ladies of her age would be just finishing the morning toilettes after a night of balls and routs. Not this one. Crossing the street ahead of Fyclan, she walked with purpose. She glanced at her scrap of paper repeatedly as if searching for an address. Her maid had to scamper to keep up with her. Her aggrieved footman held out his arm to protect her from the heavy traffic and unwarranted advances. [br]
Fyclan crossed the street as well, wanting to keep her in his sights. [br]
He didn’t quite know how he would approach her or gain an introduction, but reach her he would— [br]
His friend Bishard laid both hands on his arm and swung him around. He kept hold of Fyclan’s jacket as he waved his hand in front of his face. “Are you not listening to me? Damn it all, Morris, I’ve never seen you chase a woman before, and now you charge off like a hound on the trace of a scent.” [br]
Fyclan laughed. “Only yesterday you chastised me for not being more aware of the fair sex. Well, now I am aware. Very aware. And I’m about to lose her, so excuse me—” [br]
Bishard held fast. “She’s not for you.” [br]
Those were fighting words. “And why not?” [br]
His friend glanced around as if those on the pavement around them would be keenly interested in what he was about to say. His voice lowered. [br] “Stowe has spoken for her.” [br]
He referred to the marquess of Stowe, one of the wealthiest men in London. The directors of the Company were keenly interested in him. Not only did they want his money for investment, they also needed his political patronage. [br]
Bishard’s warning did give Fyclan pause. He looked in the direction of his goddess. She was moving steadily away, a bright blue gem weaving in and out amongst a sea of drab, hard working men and women, people whose lives held no room for such a lively color.[br]
And he knew he must not lose her. “Who is Stowe to me?” he said and would have charged off again in pursuit but his friend held on.[br]
“She is also Miss Jennifer Tarleton, Colonel Russell Tarleton’s daughter.”[br]
“The fool who cost us Konkan?” Fyclan referred to the battle the Company had fought against the Maratha rulers over the northern provinces. Fyclan had been the Company officer in charge and had removed the man from his command. Fyclan had lead the counter offensive himself, barely saving the Company from a humiliating defeat.[br]
“The same. And still just as foolish. From what I understand, he is in dun territory. His only hope is to marry his daughter to a trunk full of gold. Trust me, Morris, you don’t want this one.”[br]
“I have money.”[br]
“But not as much as Stowe,” Bishard answered.[br]

Review: Willow Brook Road by Sherryl Woods ~ The O'Brien's

We get to go back to the small town of Chesapeake Shores. What can a girl do when all she wants in life is to be a wife and mother? Carrie is a wonderful auntie, she takes care of most of the O'Brien children, but she's at a loss what to do professionally. Sam is shocked by the death of his only sister and her husband and the subsequent guardianship of his young nephew. Their meeting is significant and it follows on to their relationship, creating a few troubles to get past.

My heart goes out to Sam and his nephew, their struggle to cope is heart wrenching. The O'Briens' pull through and help though in their typical style, although, some a little too much.  We see some struggles within the ranks of the O'Brien family as well, which if you've read them at all is a little shocking.

All in all it was a nice addition to the O'Brien series. I always enjoy coming back and seeing what everyone is doing, especially that meddlesome Mick! ;) It's really hard to keep a long running series about a small town alive and fresh, but Woods is an expert at it!

*If you haven't read these stories from the beginning it's alright to pick up now but I'd advise for you to start with the beginning. You'll get so much more information as the family progresses through their trials and tribulations.

Quote-tastic/Kindle First Review: Kissing Mr. Right by Michelle Major

quote-tastic final with green border"Quote-Tastic" is a meme hosted every Monday on Herding Cats & Burning Soup. To participate you have to post a favorite quote from a current or past read.

"I don't know what it is, but I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since the crash. He touched his finger to the tip of her nose. "You are the most irritating woman I've ever met, " he murmured as his eyes devoured her. "Stubborn, snooty, argumentative..."

She started to move away. "Is this your idea of sweet talk? I'm shocked you're still on the market."

A sweet romantic story of two people with completely different backgrounds finding love.
Kendall Clark had a master plan, career then a family. A lifestyles reporter for a Denver television station, she invested herself in the people of the community. She grew up poor and she wants bigger and better things for herself and her goal is New York. One little fender bender later and Tyler Bishop enters her life at the WRONG time, or so she believes.
Tyler Bishop, oh man be still my heart! What is he the rugged man who works with dirt or the well-born scientist?

sexy-gardner  Or  manSpecs_1474972c

The chemistry between Ken and Ty was real from the start. Kendall fought her attraction to Ty,   The dialogue between the two was witty and snarky at times, I loved the snarks! The characters were well developed and there was some "evil villain" conflict that made the story more interesting. All in all It was a nice, easy read. Left me with a smile on my face and wanting more of Kendall's two best friends and Ty's siblings. :)

Sunday Post #4 ~ Comic Con

 [br] [br] [br]

Whew!! This is a late post of Sunday. My sister came up and we headed to Nashville for Comic-Con! This was only our second visit but it was so awesome! I sat in on the Duke's of Hazzard Panel. Those talk over each other like brothers and sisters!  [br]  [br] Duke's of Hazzard [br] [br]

Then today we went to watch Transylvania 2 with my daughter. When I think of Transylvania I think of the old movie Transylvania 6-5000! Who  remembers that movie?

Today we watched the Once Upon a Time season 5 premiere. My daughter had watched Seasons 1-4 on Netflix this summer, repeatedly. She asked me why they were so cruel that they wouldn't put Season 5 up on Netflix yet. LOL.  *Shaking my head* This is her first time to really get involved in a TV show that wasn't on Disney or Nick!

Blog Tour: Snowbound at Christmas by Debbie Mason ~ Flower Fights & Twin Switches

 [space size=10]

Harry drew a bouquet of Tiger Lilies from behind his back and handed them to her. "We seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot, Cat. I was hoping we could start over." [br]
She stared at the extravagant arrangement, then lifted her gaze to his. "For me?" [br]Tiger Lillies
He smiled. "For you." [br]
"I--I don't know what to say. They're beautiful. Thank you." She meant it. Her ex hadn't been a hearts-and-flowers kind of guy. The last man who'd given her flowers had been her father. They'd arrived the day she made detective. Three weeks later he died. [br]
"My goodness, would you let him in," her sister said, coming up behind Cat. "Sorry, you'll have to excuse my sister's. . . Oh, Harry, they're exquisite. Thank you." Chloe went to take the bouquet from Cat.[br]
She clutched them possessively to her chest. "They're mine." She didn't know what had gotten into her, but she felt like a seven-year-old being asked to share her favorite toy. [br]
Chloe gave a shocked laugh, obviously as surprised by Cat's reaction as she was. "Kit Kat, don't be ridiculous. You're embarrassing your . . . " She tugged on the flowers and Cat tugged back .[br]
Harry neatly inserted himself between them, ending their silent tug-of-war. With a gallant bow, her handed her sister a single pink sweetheart rose. "For you, Chloe. A perfect flower for a perfect woman." [br]
"Oh, I see. Thank you, Harry. It's . . . lovely. Please, come in. I didn't hear the bell." She shot Cat an accusatory stare. "I was busy getting our dinner ready." [br]
"I can see that. You have a touch of--" Harry leaned in, wiping away the strategically placed white powder--"flour on your cheek. I hope you didn't go to too much trouble on my account." [br]
Her sister was too much, Cat thought with a mental eye roll. Chloe wore a black apron-- with a pink sparkly crown above the word Diva (fitting)--over a flirty pink dress. [br]
She gave Cat a zip-it look as Harry toed off his loafers. Probably worried Cat would spill her secret that the gourmet shop did indeed do takeout. She wouldn't of course. Though, admittedly, she was tempted to.[br]

The struggle was real between these two twins. I'll have to say Cat is an awesome sister, she put up with more crap from Chloe than I ever would have.

Grayson, posing as Harry, the British Lord actor, was just full of secrets and he begins to fall for Cat despite all his misgivings.  It was a nice little spot of fun to watch him react to Cat as Chloe.

There was a lot of mystery and intrigue going on throughout the story. The two supporting get characters I love the most were Graysos's Grandmother and Ty they both brought something special to the story.

All in all it was an easy read that kept my attention and do brought out plenty of emotion.

Rockin' Reads Giveaway Hop

rockin reads

 [br]  [br]

Everyone needs a Rockin' Read! Stop by Sept 23rd to 30th and find out which reads have rocked 2015 for us! There will be a giveaway on each blog so don't forget to visit them all! [br]  [br]

It's a hard thing to choose a Rockin' Read out of all my favorite reads so far this year. I have a thing for bad, bad boys though, so I know just who to pick. [br] [br]

  [br]  [br]

Revenant is surely considered on of those. That sexy fallen angel was deceived for 5000 years and was told he was evil so often he though he was indeed evil. His transformation tore at my heartstrings and was sweet to behold. He is a cocky, arrogant fallen angel who could not grasp that Blaspheme was telling him she was NOT interested! But, of course, she was and the sexual chemistry was off the charts! Even knowing how dangerous he could be to her life, Blaspheme could not resist this bad boy for long! [br]  [br]

Top Ten Tuesday - 10 Books I'm Excited to Read this Fall

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s theme is Top 10 on my Fall TBR.   [space size=15]

These are 10 of my most anticipated releases this fall! Yes, although some of them have come out already, I'm still waiting to read them.

Born of Betrayal1. Born of Betrayal Sherrilyn Kenyon #10 in The League

Years ago, family loyalty caused Fain Hauk to give up everything he loved: His military career. His planet. His fiancée. Even his name.

Now decades later, everything has changed. He’s built a new life out of the ashes of his old, and he’s vowed to never let anything threaten his loved ones again.

But when old enemies align themselves with new ones, he’s caught in the middle of a brutal war. And when fate throws his former fiancée back into his world and she has her own agenda that includes taking his head for what he did to her years ago, more than just his life is at stake. The fate of the Ichidian universe and that of his brothers-in-arms hangs in the balance. Winner take all.

It’s killed or be killed, and never has the battle been more fierce…
Or more fun.

Drafter2. The Drafter Kim Harrison #1 in The Peri Reed

Detroit 2030. Double-crossed by the person she loved and betrayed by the covert government organization that trained her to use her body as a weapon, Peri Reed is a renegade on the run.

Don’t forgive and never forget has always been Peri’s creed. But her day job makes it difficult: she is a drafter, possessed of a rare, invaluable skill for altering time, yet destined to forget both the history she changed and the history she rewrote.

When Peri discovers her name on a list of corrupt operatives, she realizes that her own life has been manipulated by the agency. She joins forces with a mysterious rogue soldier in a deadly race to piece together the truth about her final task, unable to trust even herself.

Dark Ghost3. Dark Ghost Christine Feehan #27 in The Carpathians

He wasn’t civilized or tame. He had his own code and he lived by it.

Monk. Bounty hunter. Vampire slayer. Andre Boroi has spent centuries battling the undead, holding out against the dark with honor. But now, gravely wounded by master vampire Costin Popescu, Andre will be easy to track—his spilled blood marking the killing trail for Popescu and his hungry band of underlings. Andre’s only chance is to disappear into the gray mist of the Carpathians. To wait. To hope.

She had a healing touch and a scent that was his lifeblood.

In the mountains in search of a precious crystal, geologist Teagan Joanes suddenly finds herself hunted by those she once trusted. Then she comes across the warrior—wounded, wanting and irresistible. Andre has been craving her for an eternity: his lifemate. Her warmth envelops him. Her scent pulsates. And with every beat of her heart, Teagan surrenders to a passion she can’t possibly comprehend.

Now they are bound by destiny, but is it enough to keep them safe from a stalking, relentless darkness that threatens to swallow them alive?

Obsession Falls4. Obsession Falls Christina Dodd #2 in Virtue Falls

When Taylor Summers witnesses the death threat to a young boy, she does the only thing she can do-she sacrifices herself to distract the killers. Her reward is a life in ruins, on the run in the wilderness, barely surviving a bitter winter and the even more bitter knowledge she has lost everything: her career, her reputation, her identity. She finds refuge in Virtue Falls, and there comes face to face with the knowledge that, to live her life again, she must enlist the help of the man who does not trust her to defeat the man who would destroy her.

She's being hunted, but it's time to turn the tables....

Evergreen Springs5. Evergreen Springs RaeAnne Thayne #3 in Haven Point

Christmas is the last thing Cole Barrett is thinking about this year. He's barely hanging on trying to care for his two grieving children since his ex-wife died in a tragic accident. For the reclusive Cole, this is no time for gift-giving and celebration—and certainly not for a sunny-natured optimist to blow into his screwed-up life.

In the years since her cancer treatments, physician Devin Shaw has researched the curative powers of Lake Haven's mineral waters. Unfortunately, the hot springs are on Barrett property, forcing Devin to strike a bargain with the ranch's attractively gruff owner: she'll give Cole's children the magical Christmas they deserve, and Cole will allow her patients access to the springs. But can she work her holiday magic to heal the Barrett family's battered hearts—and her own?

Stolen Mackenzie6. The Stolen MacKenzie Bride Jennifer Ashley #8 in Highland Pleasures

1745, Scotland: The youngest son of the scandalous Mackenzie family, Malcolm is considered too wild to tame…until he meets a woman who is too unattainable to resist.

Lady Mary Lennox is English, her father highly loyal to the king, and promised to another Englishman. But despite it being forbidden to speak to Malcolm, Lady Mary is fascinated by the Scotsman, and stolen moments together lead to a passion greater than she’d ever dreamed of finding.

When fighting breaks out between the Highlanders and the King's army, their plans to elope are thwarted, and it will take all of Malcolm’s daring as a Scottish warrior to survive the battle and steal a wife out from under the noses of the English.

Winter Wedding7. A Winter Wedding Brenda Novak #9 in Whiskey Creek

Kyle Houseman believes he'll never find anyone he could love as much as Olivia Arnold, who's now married to his stepbrother. Not only did he lose her, he's been through one divorce and has no desire to go through another. He's determined to be extra careful about the next woman he gets involved with—which is why he fights his attraction to the beautiful stranger who rents his farmhouse for the Christmas holiday.

Lourdes Bennett is a country music artist. She's only planning to stay in Whiskey Creek long enough to write the songs for her next album—the album that's going to put her back on top. Her dreams don't include settling in a town even smaller than the one she escaped. But as she comes to know Kyle, she begins to wonder if she'd be making a terrible mistake to leave him behind.

Irresistible Rogue8. The Irresistible Rogue Valerie Bowman #4 in Playful Brides

Lady Daphne Swift comes from a family with two brothers who have proudly served the Crown. She may be a female, but she's willing to do whatever it takes to prove that she's as useful to the war effort as her brothers. She even went so far as to secretly marry a spy. The fact that she just happened to have been pining for Captain Rafe Cavendish for years didn't hurt matters. But after their first mission, when she realized their marriage had been strictly business, Daphne immediately wanted an annulment. The fiery Daphne has always been a multi-tasker and now she's hell bent on two things: finding the men who killed her brother and securing her engagement to another man to forget about Rafe forever.

As a spy for the War Office, Captain Rafferty Cavendish has been on dozens of missions. But one mission haunts him, the mission that resulted in the death of Daphne Swift's eldest brother, Donald. Rafe agreed to work with Daphne once and put her life in danger. Now he must find the men who killed Donald, avenge the family, and convince Daphne to give him one more chance. But Daphne's enlisted her other older brother, Julian, to help her get a quick and quiet annulment so that she can marry a fop who only wants her for her title and money. Can Rafe convince Daphne to give him one more chance, on the mission and with her heart?

Sweetest Scoundrel9. Sweetest Scoundrel Elizabeth Hoyt #9 in Maiden Lane

Prim, proper, and thrifty, Eve Dinwoody is all business when it comes to protecting her brother's investment. But when she agrees to control the purse strings of London's premier pleasure garden, Harte's Folly, she finds herself butting heads with an infuriating scoundrel who can't be controlled.

Bawdy and bold, Asa Makepeace doesn't have time for a penny-pinching prude like Eve. As the garden's larger-than-life owner, he's already dealing with self-centered sopranos and temperamental tenors. He's not about to let an aristocratic woman boss him around . . . no matter how enticing she is.

In spite of her lack of theatrical experience—and her fiery clashes with Asa—Eve is determined to turn Harte's Folly into a smashing success. But the harder she tries to manage the stubborn rake, the harder it is to ignore his seductive charm and raw magnetism. There's no denying the smoldering fire between them—and trying to put it out would be the greatest folly of all.

The Harder You Fall10. The Harder You Fall Gena Showalter #3 in Original Heartbreakers

Millionaire video-game creator Lincoln West has a dark and tragic past. The sought-after bachelor lives by a rigid schedule and a single rule—one relationship per year, lasting no more than two months. No exceptions. He moved to small town Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, with his brothers-by-circumstance hoping to escape the worst of his memories—until a brash beauty dredges up long-buried emotions.

A reformed party girl, Jessie Kay Dillon is determined to walk the straight and narrow. But her love-hate sizzle with West is just too irresistible. They can't be near each other without tearing off their clothes, but the last thing she needs is to be his next two-month dump. Can she be the one exception? Because as any former girl-gone-wild knows: rules are made to be broken.
