When Music Tells a Story

For some people, smells trigger memories. The sweet fragrance of vanilla might make you think of baking cookies with Nana or the salty, fresh scent of the ocean might remind you of your honeymoon.

For me, music triggers memories. When I hear Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” I’m no longer a grown-up with a mortgage and a never-ending to-do list, but a young girl dancing with my friends.

Music not only triggers memories, but it also defines generations. Baby Boomers, for example, likely have fond memories of listening to the Beatles, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones. When I was a teenager, I listened to Madonna’s “Material Girl” and “Like a Virgin” so much that I still know all the lyrics nearly three decades later.

In The Perfect Fit, the age difference between the hero and heroine is amplified by the music they like. And, they like different types of music too.

The twenty-five-year-old heroine, Margo Lange, listens to pop artists like The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, and Bruno Mars. The hero, Zeke May, is eleven years older than Margo, and he grew up listening to Guns ‘N Roses, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Metallica.

Margo’s sunny, optimistic personality rubs off on Zeke, though… along with her taste in music. Despite his dislike of popular artists and songs, he finds himself humming her favorite songs like “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd.

Many authors—myself included—create playlists for their books. My playlists usually include songs that show up in the novel or remind me of the hero and heroine’s relationship. I also include tunes that I listened to while writing.

Here’s my playlist for The Perfect Fit. I’ve linked the song titles to the YouTube videos, and the entire playlist is available on Spotify by clicking here.

Artist                          Song Title

Alice in Chains           Heaven Beside You

Bruno Mars                 Uptown Funk

Guns ‘N Roses            You Could Be Mine

Demi Lovato               Heart Attack

Red Hot Chili Peppers Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie

Metallica                    Nothing Else Matters

Selena Gomez             Hands to Myself

Soundgarden               The Day I Tried to Live

Taylor Swift               Shake It Off

The Weeknd               Can’t Feel My Face

What do you think about music in books? Do you like it when authors provide playlists for their novels?

Well, I for one just adore that playlist! I'm of the generation of the Red
Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica but I'm more of a country music girl. I've learned to enjoy some good old rock'n'roll though and  this playlist sure has a mixture of great music!

I just want to add my short little opinion in here about The Perfect Fit! I thought Zeke was scrumptious and Margo is so damn sweet! They sure had a time of it with that ex-wife of his and the major age difference but they were definitely perfect for one another.

Synopsis

Zeke May has spent the past two years recovering from an IED attack and trying to adjust to life as a civilian. The veteran hiring program at denim empire Riley O’Brien & Co. offers a new beginning. The only problem is the high cost of housing in San Francisco, and Margo Lange could be the perfect solution.

Now that Margo has completed veterinary school, she’s ready to fulfill her dream of living in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, she’s drowning in student loan debt and the only places she can afford are dumps. Luckily, one of her uncle’s Army buddies needs a roommate.
Although Zeke’s place is a perfect fit for Margo’s budget, he is not what she expects. He’s much younger than her uncle, and he’s melt-your-panties hot. She doesn’t want to fall for him, but it doesn’t take her long to realize that Zeke is the perfect fit for her, regardless of their age gap. Too bad he’s so obviously still in love with his ex-wife…
